Game Fantasy — Omega War

Stage 2 artifact review · skill: game-fantasy · research executed and page updated 2026-06-10

alignment_status: review — Stage 2 of 3 (artifact approval).
Research is complete; the full working packet (research/_working/preliminary-game-fantasy-research.md) is rendered below. Approving this page (final compiled YAML) triggers Stage 3: write canonical research/game-fantasy.md, archive the packet, confirm this page.
Revision — 2026-06-10 (Stage 2 feedback cycle). Feedback received on Player Fantasy (▼ investigate-and-revise): the casus belli "the Allies turn on the Soviet Union" read one-sided; requested instead the WARNO/Wargame lore pattern — real history until a spark event nudges both sides to war ("What was the Able Archer for Operation Unthinkable?" — Franz Ferdinand → July Crisis analogy) — plus a premise that foregrounds late-WW2 equipment that barely got to fight. Changes on this page (green-highlighted): new FRQ4 Claim 4.2 — spark-event evidence, the Eugen divergence-pattern precedent, and the equipment evidence (§3); the §4 fantasy statement rewritten spark-driven and two-sided; a new required Spark-Event Divergence gate in §4 (required questions now 11: 7 gates + 4 glossary); the deck-tactician variant and Pillar 2 pick up "the 1946 arsenal gets its war"; hook candidate 1's first clause revised (§7); a new evidence-matrix row (§11). Pre-revision version archived at docs/history/archive/2026-06-10/172429/alignment/. Page remains in Stage 2 (review); the Stage 1 approval record below is untouched.
What changed since the Stage 1 page (archived at docs/history/archive/2026-06-10/132606/alignment/): the approved scope/source/assumption sections are condensed into the approval record below; all findings (FRQ1–FRQ7), the full deliverable draft (player fantasy, pillars, vibe references, hook candidates, first-session promise, tone spectrum), the evidence matrix, assumption-register status, coverage gaps, glossary additions, and new artifact-approval gates are new. Scope was executed as approved; the main-session sweep method (noted in the Stage 1 page) was used as planned.

1. Stage 1 Approval Record approved 2026-06-10

Final compiled YAML received 2026-06-10 — all 7 scope gates answered, no negative feedback:
  • Scope/non-goals: approve-as-proposed (FRQ1–FRQ7; deliverable shape: player fantasy + per-segment variants, 3–5 emotional pillars, vibe references, 2–4 hook candidates with one recommended, minutes-0–30 first-session promise; non-goals: no genre mapping, no comparable teardowns, no store assets, no mechanics design, no audience-evidence re-collection).
  • Evidence coverage: approve-all-four (F1 comparables' marketing language, F2 player emotional language, F3 premise emotional framing, F4 hook & first-session patterns).
  • Coverage checkpoint: exhaustive sweep (loop until new angles stop producing novel evidence, as in the audience cycle).
  • Assumptions: accept-all (F-A1–F-A5; F-A2 tone and F-A3 hook-lead flagged as the genuinely open ones — both get decision gates on this page).
  • Artifact destination: working packet at research/_working/preliminary-game-fantasy-research.md — written.
  • Proposed file changes: approve-file-set (Stage 3 may write research/game-fantasy.md, update alignment/index.html, archive packet, convert this page to confirmed, append approved glossary terms, touch tasks/*.md only if real follow-up work emerges).
  • Post-approval route: continue to /game-genre-map after the canonical artifact is written.
Method note (carried from Stage 1 page): research subagents have no web access in this environment; the exhaustive sweep executed in the main session (~18 search batches + 12 fetches, 2026-06-10). Stopping rule honored: final batches produced only no-link results or repeats.

2. Executive Summary

3. Findings by Research Question

All URLs accessed 2026-06-10. Confidence tags: high medium low. carried = reused from approved research/game-audience.md, not re-collected.

FRQ1 — What fantasy does each comparable sell? (F1)

Claim 1.1 — The genre's marketed fantasy is "be the commander of the hot war," dressed in scale and brutality adjectives. high

Inference: commander role + named hot-war scenario is table stakes; spectacle/scale adjectives are undifferentiating. Persistence ("thrilling career", divisions that evolve) is the rarest marketed emotion — EndWar's career framing and SD2's role ladder are the only gestures at it. Omega War's marketed fantasy should fuse the two: every altitude of command, in a war that remembers. medium-high (pattern across six store pages, but trailer frames not analyzed, §12).

FRQ2 — What do players actually feel in the games they love? (F2)

Claim 2.1 — The lived vocabulary is tension/dread, managed chaos, and cinematic awe — not domination. medium-high

Inference: the marketed/lived gap is exploitable — players' peak moments are almost losing control and holding the line anyway, plus the cinematic payoff of watching their plan execute. Omega War's pillars should target tension→relief and plan-payoff explicitly rather than power fantasy. medium (press + review snippets; direct Reddit thread quotes were not retrievable this sweep, §12).

FRQ3 — Emotional beats of the operational-commander fantasy (F2)

Claim 3.1 — The operational fantasy has four named beats: front ownership, encirclement payoff, husbanding, and consequence handoff. high

Inference: the fantasy's load-bearing emotion is continuity of consequence between map and battle. When the handoff works the player feels like a theater commander; when it doesn't, the layers read as two disconnected games and the fantasy collapses. Omega War's one-war promise ("front lines emerge from where formations actually stand") is aimed at exactly this beat. high on the beat structure; the design fix is inference.

FRQ4 — How is the Unthinkable / WW3-1945 premise framed emotionally? (F3)

Claim 4.1 — The premise's native emotional register is sober: dread, distrust, audacity, war-weariness — plus forbidden-what-if fascination. high

Inference: pulp/camp framing would fight the premise's native register and the clean-Wehrmacht guardrail; grim TNO-dread would fight the genre's spectacle joy and the diorama art. The natural fit is the middle register — §9. high that the native register is sober; the fit conclusion is inference.

Claim 4.2 — A two-sided "spark event" framing is historically available and is the genre's proven lore pattern. high new — 2026-06-10 revision mini-sweep (all URLs accessed 2026-06-10)

  • Eugen lore-pattern precedent (the pattern the feedback named): WARNO's setting is real history until April 1987, when hardliners stage a coup against Gorbachev over perestroika; two years of escalation follow before the Cold War "finally turns hot" in 1989. Press reception: "a convincingly plausible alt-history 1989" (PCGamesN, Wikipedia). The pattern: one political divergence, then both blocs escalate — neither side reads as the cartoon aggressor.
  • Spark candidate A — a Niš-style incident goes hot. The Niš incident, 7 Nov 1944: P-38s of the USAAF 82nd Fighter Group strafed a Red Army column near Niš, Yugoslavia (31 killed, incl. Lt. Gen. Grigory Kotov); Yak-9s of the 866th Fighter Aviation Regiment scrambled into a ~15-minute air battle with losses on both sides; officially a navigational error, formally apologized for (Harriman, on behalf of Roosevelt and Marshall, 14 Dec 1944) and classified by both governments (Wikipedia, Military.com). The only documented direct US–Soviet combat — the spark already happened once and was contained. Divergence: a second such incident at the 1945 contact line is not contained. high
  • Spark candidate B — Patton lives. Patton's confront-the-Soviets advocacy is documented in substance ("we may have been fighting the wrong enemy… we should go after the bastards now" — exact wording varies by attestation), as are his removal after the Sept 1945 denazification remarks and his death on 21 Dec 1945 after a road accident near Mannheim (Wikiquote, Factually fact-check). high on stance + timeline; medium on exact quote wording (flag for any verbatim game copy).
  • Spark candidate C — Churchill wins the July 1945 election. Real timeline: Unthinkable's hypothetical start date was 1 July 1945; the election was held 5 July and declared 26 July — a Labour landslide (majority 146) that removed the plan's author from power (Wikipedia: Unthinkable, Wikipedia: 1945 election). A political divergence bracketing the plan's own date — the structural twin of WARNO's coup. high
  • Spark candidate D — the defensive Unthinkable (Soviet first move). The second Unthinkable study was explicitly defensive: Britain defending against a Soviet drive to the North Sea and the Atlantic after American withdrawal (Wikipedia, re-verified from the Claim 4.1 capture). Two-sided war fear was native to the planners themselves. high
  • Equipment angle — "the 1946 arsenal gets its war." Centurion: six prototypes reached the 22nd Armoured Brigade in Germany in May 1945, weeks too late for combat (Wikipedia). M26 Pershing: the first 20 reached the European theater in early 1945, first action 25 Feb 1945 near the Roer; it "saw only a limited amount of combat" (Wikipedia). The roster fantasy — late-war equipment history shelved, finally fielded — is evidence-backed and unique to the 1945–46 window. high

Inference: framing the premise as real history until a spark, then mutual escalation is (a) the Eugen lore pattern the audience already accepts, (b) historically native (Niš + the defensive study), and (c) it dissolves the one-sided-aggressor reading flagged in feedback. Which spark becomes canon is a user taste decision — gated in §4; the fantasy statement is written spark-agnostic until that gate resolves.

FRQ5 — Hook patterns for niche strategy titles (F4)

Claim 5.1 — Successful capsules follow scenario+role, pedigree+role, or hybrid-claim formulas, and marketing guidance says lead with uniqueness in ~300 characters. high

Inference: Omega War's uniqueness ordering is premise (unmined, creator-validated) > two-layer persistence > deck×base hybrid > browser delivery. OpenFront's example suggests browser belongs at the end of the hook as a friction-remover, not the lead. Supports F-A3 (premise-led). Candidates in §7. medium-high — survivorship-biased patterns, per approved limit.

FRQ6 — What must the first session deliver, and where do genre first sessions fail? (F4)

Claim 6.1 — The first 15 minutes must deliver the core fantasy and foreshadow the rest; 5 minutes is the hook unit; missions want a 3-act shape. high

Inference: Omega War's first session must reach first meaningful command decision inside ~5 minutes, first plan-payoff by ~15, and must show the deck×base hybrid rather than explain it. Mapped to the vertical slice in §8. high on the principles; the mapping is design inference.

FRQ7 — Vibe references for the aesthetic-emotional register (F3+F4)

Claim 7.1 — The genre's emotional ancestors are explicit, and stylization has precedent for licensing distance from grimness. medium-high

Inference: the vibe stack is "war-room gravity above, war-movie humanity below, living-diorama stylization throughout." Full reference set with borrow-notes in §6.

4. Player Fantasy (proposed)

Primary fantasy statement (written for the primary segment, per F-A1)

Rewritten 2026-06-10 per feedback — spark-driven and two-sided (FRQ4 Claim 4.2); written spark-agnostic until the Spark-Event Divergence gate below resolves. Changed passages highlighted.

You are the theater commander of the war history refused to fight. July 1945: history holds its course until one spark — and the alliance that beat Germany tears itself apart into the war both sides had already drawn up plans for. The whole European war is yours — you maneuver real formations on a living map, drop into the battles your own maneuvers create, and command them through cover, suppression, and escalating phases with a force you built yourself, fielding the 1946 arsenal that history shelved. Your divisions carry their scars, their veterans, and their story from battle to battle. The map and the battlefield are the same war — and the war remembers what you did.

Gate — Fantasy Statement Verdict required

Spark-event candidates new — 2026-06-10 revision

The feedback asked: "What was the Able Archer for Operation Unthinkable?" — the divergence that turns real history into the war. The revision mini-sweep (FRQ4 Claim 4.2) found four historically grounded candidates plus the genre's proven escalation pattern (WARNO: one divergence → two years of escalation → both blocs at war). The table below scores each; the gate underneath asks you to pick the canon.

CandidateWhat really happened (evidence · accessed 2026-06-10)Plausibility as sparkWhat it does to faction framing
A. A Niš-style incident goes hot7 Nov 1944: USAAF P-38s strafed a Red Army column (Gen. Kotov killed); Soviet Yak-9s scrambled; ~15-min air battle; hushed by both governments with a formal apology (Wikipedia, Military.com) highStrongest "Franz Ferdinand" — the spark already happened once and was contained; the what-if is only "this time it isn't"Most symmetric: an accident neither government wanted, then escalation logic takes both. Nobody is the cartoon aggressor.
B. Patton lives / "fight them now"Documented confront-the-Soviets stance; removed from command Sept–Oct 1945; died 21 Dec 1945, road accident near Mannheim (Wikiquote, Factually) high (stance) / medium (exact quotes)The classic alt-history spark; strong character anchorPulls back toward Allied-initiated framing unless paired with an incident — partially re-creates the problem the feedback flagged.
C. Churchill wins the July 1945 electionUnthinkable dated 1 July 1945; election held 5 July, declared 26 July — Labour landslide removed the plan's author (Wikipedia, Wikipedia) highPolitical divergence bracketing the plan's own date — the structural twin of WARNO's Gorbachev coupKeeps the author in power and the plan alive, but still needs a shooting trigger; best as tinder, not the spark itself.
D. Defensive Unthinkable (Soviet first move)The second Unthinkable study was defensive: Britain vs. a Soviet drive to the North Sea/Atlantic after US withdrawal (Wikipedia) highHistorically native — the planners themselves wargamed itReverses the aggressor read rather than dissolving it; sober, but one-sided in the other direction unless framed as an escalation spiral.
Blend — July-Crisis chain (recommended)Pattern precedent: WARNO's divergence → escalation window → hot war, "convincingly plausible alt-history" (PCGamesN) highMirrors both the July Crisis (the user's analogy) and the Eugen patternPolitical tinder (B and/or C) + a Niš-style incident as the spark + weeks of failed de-escalation: both sides mobilize believing the other moved first.

Gate — Spark-Event Divergence required new

Which divergence becomes the canonical spark — Omega War's Franz Ferdinand? (The fantasy statement above stays spark-agnostic; your choice anchors the Stage 3 premise copy and all later framing — cold-open text, faction copy, campaign fiction.)

5. Emotional Pillars (proposed — 5 of the 3–5 contract)

Pillar 1 — Command weight

The player's decisions feel consequential because losses persist and information is incomplete. Evidence: fog-of-war dread (FRQ2), husbanding/fatigue praise (FRQ3), Sea Power's cat-and-mouse tension (FRQ5). Design implications: persistent veterancy and casualties across the campaign; recon genuinely matters; pausable real-time and mid-battle saves (genre complaint register) so weight never becomes hostage-taking; UI surfaces "what this battle cost".

Pillar 2 — The plan comes together

The signature high is authored payoff: the flank arrives, the encirclement closes, the phase-2 armor you gated behind your build order rolls out exactly when needed. Evidence: encirclement satisfaction (FRQ3), Regiments' verb copy ("feign retreats, stage defenses, counter-attack"), Browder's 3-act arc (FRQ6). Design implications: the deck×base hybrid is the payoff engine — build order = plan authorship; battles need at least one legible set-piece beat; the strategic layer needs visible payoff moments (pockets closing, fronts collapsing); the 1946 almost-weapons (Centurion, Pershing — FRQ4 Claim 4.2) are natural phase-gated payoff material — the arsenal history shelved is the reward shelf.

Pillar 3 — Spectacle with meaning

Cinematic combined-arms drama that reads at a glance — the CoH lineage ("brutality… and the humanity"), WiC's awe, WARNO's "incredibly cinematic" — delivered as a living diorama in stylized low-poly. Evidence: FRQ2 spectacle vocabulary; Toy Soldiers stylization precedent (FRQ7); creator clips skew spectacle carried. Design implications: readable silhouettes and tracer/explosion language over photoreal detail; a camera that rewards zooming in (clip-friendly = browser wedge synergy); radio chatter + authentic-feeling weapon audio from slice one; destruction/suppression states must be legible at diorama scale.

Pillar 4 — The forbidden what-if, honestly told

Sober fascination — dread, audacity, war-weariness — not pulp triumph. Evidence: FRQ4 (the premise's native register; Hollandspiele's apprehension/menace grammar; mutiny-risk texture; clean-Wehrmacht guardrail carried). Design implications: framing copy written in the war-room register ("the odds were called fanciful — you are going to try anyway"); faction text acknowledges what re-armed German formations are; exile formations carry the emotional spotlight; victory framing is "the war is decided", never "the war was fun for everyone".

Pillar 5 — Mastery without anxiety

Depth is the feature; the on-ramp is the bet. Single-player-first means the player is allowed to learn, pause, save, retry. Evidence: complexity prized carried; vs-AI as accepted on-ramp carried; SP-neglect as the genre's open wound carried; Regiments' "refreshing" SP-only reception (FRQ5). Design implications: difficulty that flexes without insulting; AI quality is a core feature not a mode; teach-by-doing first session (§8); no mechanics locked behind multiplayer ever (v1 has none — keep it a promise, not an apology).

Gate — Pillar Verdict required

Adopt the five pillars (command weight / plan comes together / spectacle with meaning / forbidden what-if honestly told / mastery without anxiety) with their design implications?

7. One-Sentence Hook (candidates)

Pattern basis: FRQ5 (scenario+role lead; uniqueness first; browser as closer, not lead). All candidates assume premise-led per F-A3.

  1. Recommended — premise + command totality + browser closer: (first clause revised 2026-06-10 — two-sided spark framing)
July 1945: one spark, and the Allies and the Soviets turn on each other. Omega War is the RTS about the World War III that almost happened — command the whole European war, from the theater map down to every battle, in your browser.
Short form: "The WW3 that almost happened in 1945. Command all of it — map to battlefield — in your browser."
  2. Fantasy-led: Command the war history refused to fight — maneuver real armies across a living map of 1945 Europe, then fight every battle your maneuvers create.
  3. Hybrid-claim (Broken Arrow formula): Deck-building wargame depth × Company of Heroes-style tactical combat × a persistent European war map — the 1945 WW3 hybrid the genre never built, zero install.
  4. Segment-defiant (Stormgate-lesson): A single-player-first WW3 wargame that remembers your veterans, rewards your plan, and never asks you to queue.

Rationale for #1: it is the only candidate that leads with the unmined, creator-validated premise (strongest positioning finding carried), names the role fantasy in one clause, and uses browser the way OpenFront does — as the friction line, not the identity. #3 is the strongest store short description complement; #4 is community-post copy, not a capsule.

Gate — Hook Selection required

Which hook becomes the canonical one-sentence hook? (Non-selected candidates are preserved in the artifact as alternates for later /game-store-page-test copy testing.)

8. Fast First-Session Promise (minutes 0–30 → vertical slice)

Scope honesty per F-A5: session one delivers the tactical slice (one battle: fixed-deck deployment, capture points, cover/suppression, base building, basic AI); the strategic layer is promised, not delivered. Approved through the Canonical Write gate (§13); use section feedback for beat-level changes.

Planned first-session emotional arc (intensity by beat)

2–5First deployment from a pre-built deck; move to first capture point; first contact."I'm commanding" (Pillar 1) — within Zukowski's 5-minute hook unitdeck hand UI (read-only), move/capture, basic enemy contact
5–15Teach-by-doing wrinkle (Browder act 2): infantry pinned in the open → cover + suppression rescue + flank = first authored payoff. First base structure built on-screen unlocks deck phase 2 — the hybrid shown, not explained.tension → "my plan worked" (Pillar 2); hybrid novelty landscover/suppression model legible; one build→unlock chain; scripted-light wrinkle
15–25Escalation: phase-2 armor deploys; combined-arms set piece; battle won.spectacle with meaning (Pillar 3) — the clip-able momentarmor + support phase; readable diorama drama; basic AI that presses but loses gracefully
25–30Consequence epilogue: casualty/veterancy tally carried forward; strategic-map vignette shows this battle as one collision on a living front — "the war remembers; the map is coming."command weight + the pull to return (Pillars 1, 4)post-battle summary; static map tease (no campaign sim required in slice)

Emotional checkpoints (testable in /game-playtest-metrics later): minute 5 = "I'm commanding"; minute 15 = "my plan worked"; minute 30 = "this war will remember me — I want the map." Mid-battle save must exist even in the slice (direct genre-complaint counter).

9. Tone Register (F-A2 spectrum — your decision)

RegisterDescriptionEvidence fitRisks
A. Grim dread (TNO register)bleak, heavy, morally saturatedalt-history fans proven to accept it (FRQ4)fights spectacle joy (Pillar 3); mismatches low-poly diorama; narrative load a solo dev can't feed
B. War-room gravity (recommended)serious operational weight; sober premise framing; stylization provides honest distance; spectacle allowed to be beautifulmatches premise's native register (FRQ4), CoH lineage (FRQ2), Toy Soldiers stylization precedent (FRQ7), idea brief's "historically inspired, not accurate"requires consistent copy discipline; A-R5 still needs the honesty pass
C. Pulp what-if adventurepremise as playground; camp energynone found — the premise is nowhere natively pulpycollides with clean-Wehrmacht guardrail (F-A4); wargamers punish sanitized history carried

The fantasy statement, pillars, hook, and first-session copy above are all written in register B and would need revision if A or C is chosen.

Is the evidence sufficient for the canonical artifact? Known soft spots: direct Reddit lived-emotion quotes unretrievable (FRQ2 capped at medium); CoH2/CoH3 copy via search excerpts only; trailer analysis text-level; music direction pure inference (all listed in §12).

12. Source Coverage Gaps & Search Log

  1. Direct Reddit lived-emotion quotes (r/wargame, r/CompanyOfHeroes "why I love" threads): all targeted searches returned no-link results — same retrieval gap as the audience cycle. Press reviews + Steam review snippets stand in; confidence on FRQ2 capped at medium-high.

  3. Trailer analysis is text-level only (titles/descriptions), per the approved source-plan limit — no frame-by-frame fantasy read.
  4. AlternateHistoryHub / Armchair Historian Unthinkable videos: existence and titles verified; transcripts not analyzed (YouTube fetch unavailable). Tone attributed from titles + the broader essay-sphere pattern only.
  5. Music/tone direction in §6 is pure inference — no sourced evidence was gathered on what soundtrack register this audience responds to.

14. Glossary Additions

Approved terms are appended to research/glossary.md (flat mode) at Stage 3. Source: game-fantasy. Choose one option per term required.

TermDefinitionCategoryDecision
command weightEmotional pillar: the feeling that command decisions carry persistent, personal cost — irreplaceable veterans, fog-of-war risk, visible loss accounting. The player is responsible, not just busy.domain
layer handoffThe continuity of consequence between the strategic map and tactical battles — the load-bearing beat of the operational fantasy. Its documented failure mode ("layer divorce": SD2 AG "feels like an entirely other game"; WARNO AG "zero incentive to fight the battles") is Omega War's primary design guardrail.domain
war-room gravityOmega War's recommended tone register: serious operational weight and sober premise framing (the historical Unthinkable register) with stylization providing honest distance — distinct from grim TNO-style dread and from pulp what-if adventure.domain
living dioramaThe aesthetic-emotional read of Omega War's stylized low-poly battles: a detailed miniature world come alive (Toy Soldiers precedent), where stylization frames violence at an honest remove without going pulp.domain
